The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a drought alert. Below-normal rainfall and rising temperatures are worsening conditions across the country.

The PMD revealed alarming statistics. Rainfall from September 1, 2024, to January 15, 2025, was 40% below normal nationwide. Sindh, Balochistan, and Punjab are the worst-affected provinces.

Drought Hits Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan

Punjab recorded a rainfall deficit of 42%. Mild drought conditions are affecting Attock, Chakwal, Rawalpindi, Bhakkar, Layyah, Multan, Rajanpur, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Khushab, Mianwali, and Dera Ghazi Khan.

Sindh experienced a 45% rainfall shortfall. Affected districts include Ghotki, Jacobabad, Larkana, Sukkur, Karachi, Hyderabad, and Tharparkar.

In Balochistan, rainfall is 52% below normal. The affected areas include Ormara, Kharan, Turbat, Panjgur, Lasbela, Dalbandin, and nearby regions.

Rain-fed areas are particularly vulnerable. Crops, livestock, and water resources are under severe stress.

Worsening Conditions Expected

The PMD warned that drought conditions may worsen. Limited rainfall and above-normal temperatures are likely to intensify the situation. Some regions may face moderate drought in the coming months.

Farmers and stakeholders have been urged to take precautionary measures. The PMD advised using water resources efficiently and planning for crop management.
