Thousands of refugees, including over 1,600 Afghans who aided the U.S. war effort, are now stranded worldwide after President Donald Trump issued an executive order pausing the refugee resettlement program. These individuals, who had endured years of vetting to secure new lives in the United States, have had their travel plans abruptly canceled, throwing their futures into uncertainty.
Refugee Flights Suspended
The executive order, signed earlier this week, immediately suspended the processing and arrival of refugees to the U.S. An email from the agency overseeing refugee admissions confirmed the halt, stating, “Refugee arrivals to the United States have been suspended until further notice.” This decision affects more than 10,000 refugees globally who had completed rigorous screening and were set to travel in the coming weeks.
Trump’s move includes a provision allowing refugees with booked flights before the January 27 deadline to enter under certain conditions, though the scope remains unclear. Many impacted families, particularly Afghan allies and relatives of active-duty U.S. military personnel, are now in limbo.

VanDiver urged the administration to communicate clearly with affected families and honor commitments to America’s allies.
Stringent Vetting Process Overlooked
Refugees undergo one of the world’s most stringent vetting processes before gaining entry to the U.S. This includes extensive background checks and years of waiting. Agencies that support refugee resettlement have criticized the abrupt halt, emphasizing the devastating impact on families who had already endured immense hardship.
Krish O’Mara Vignarajah, head of Global Refuge, highlighted the human cost. “This abrupt halt to refugee admissions is devastating for families who waited years to rebuild their lives in safety,” she said. Many refugees saw their travel canceled just hours before departure, leaving them heartbroken and vulnerable.
Special Immigrant Visas Still Operational
While the refugee program faces suspension, the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program for Afghans who worked directly with the U.S. government remains unaffected. Established by Congress, this pathway offers an alternative for some Afghan allies, though it does not cover all impacted individuals.
Calls for Reassessment
Advocacy groups and resettlement agencies have called on the administration to reconsider its decision. They argue that halting refugee admissions undermines America’s values and its promises to those who risked their lives to support U.S. efforts.
