The government has submitted its response to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) charter of demands. National Assembly (NA) Speaker Ayaz Sadiq received the response, sources confirmed on Wednesday.
The government has not rejected PTI’s demand for a judicial commission. Instead, it has suggested forming a special or parliamentary committee. This committee would investigate the May 9 and November 26 incidents.
The government has also proposed granting parliamentary status to the existing committee. This committee is currently working under the NA Speaker’s leadership.
Legal and Constitutional Considerations
The government’s response outlines conditions for forming a judicial commission. It also explains why such a commission may not be legally or constitutionally possible.
Sources revealed that the May 9 incidents are already under judicial review. Legal experts have provided opinions on the possibility of forming a commission.
Govt Seeks List of Missing Persons
The government has asked PTI to submit a list of missing persons. It also referenced judicial decisions regarding the release of PTI’s detained leaders, including its founder.
The government stated that it has no legal objections to courts granting bail or release to PTI leaders. If the courts approve their release, the government will not oppose it.
Govt Keeps Response Confidential
The government and Speaker Ayaz Sadiq have decided not to make the response public. They will only present it if PTI returns to negotiations. If PTI resumes talks, the response will be shared in the committee.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has been briefed on the situation. Speaker Ayaz Sadiq wants to keep the committee intact. However, the government may dissolve it after January 31.
