Palestinian displacement remains a red line for Egypt and Jordan. Both nations firmly rejected Donald Trump’s proposal to relocate Gaza population to their territories, calling it an unjust and destabilizing move.
Strong Opposition from Egypt and Jordan
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi dismissed the idea outright, stating that any forced displacement of Palestinians is unacceptable. Speaking at a press conference, he warned that such a move would directly threaten Egypt’s national security.
“The displacement of Palestinians is an injustice in which we cannot participate,” el-Sisi declared, emphasizing that the focus should be on securing Palestinian statehood rather than removing them from their land.
Echoing these sentiments, Jordan’s King Abdullah II stressed that Palestinians must remain in their homeland. During a meeting in Brussels, he reaffirmed Jordan’s commitment to the two-state solution, which envisions an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.

Trump’s Controversial Proposal
Trump had earlier suggested that Palestinians be relocated to Jordan and Egypt, describing it as a way to “clean out” Gaza. This idea resurfaced this week, with Trump insisting that Gaza’s residents should be moved to “safer locations” in neighboring countries, either temporarily or permanently.
However, this proposal has drawn sharp criticism from both regional leaders and Palestinian representatives, who see it as an attempt to dismantle the dream of Palestinian statehood.
Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi strongly rejected the notion, asserting that “Jordan is for Jordanians, and Palestine is for Palestinians.”
Fear of a New Nakba
The possibility of mass displacement has raised historical fears among Palestinians. The 1948 Nakba (catastrophe) saw hundreds of thousands of Palestinians forced from their homes during Israel’s creation. Many believe a similar fate could await them if they leave Gaza.
Israel’s military offensive, which began in October 2023 following a Hamas-led attack, has already displaced nearly 2.2 million Palestinians. The war has killed over 47,000 people and devastated much of Gaza’s infrastructure.
Calls for a Lasting Solution
While rejecting Trump’s plan, el-Sisi emphasized Egypt’s commitment to a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He urged for the creation of a sovereign Palestinian state, calling it the only viable path to lasting peace.
“The solution is not to remove the Palestinian people from their place,” el-Sisi stated. “The solution is the establishment of a Palestinian state.”
Egypt and Jordan, both key US allies, have peace treaties with Israel and continue to advocate for Palestinian statehood. They fear that permanent displacement could erase Palestinian identity and further destabilize the region.
Despite receiving US military aid, both nations remain firm in their stance—Palestinians must stay on their land, and their rights must be protected.
