Samsung Expands Cobalt Recycling for Galaxy Batteries

Samsung Electronics has launched a Circular Battery Supply Chain to recover and reuse cobalt from old Galaxy batteries. This initiative aims to make battery production more sustainable and reduce reliance on newly mined cobalt.

The company’s Galaxy S24 series was the first to include recycled cobalt. Now, the upcoming Galaxy S25.1 will take this further by using 50% cobalt sourced from recycled devices, Samsung announced.

How the Circular Battery Supply Chain Works

Samsung is implementing a multi-phase process to recover cobalt from used Galaxy batteries.

While Samsung did not disclose the names of its recycling partners, it emphasized collaboration with like-minded companies to expand this initiative.

Why Samsung Is Focused on Cobalt Recycling

Cobalt is a crucial material in lithium-ion batteries, but its extraction raises significant ethical and environmental concerns.  Additionally, the high cost of cobalt makes recycling an economically viable alternative.

By expanding the use of recycled cobalt, Samsung aims to reduce its dependence on newly mined materials, lower production costs, and minimize its environmental impact.

Samsung confirmed that its commitment to cobalt recycling will not stop with the Galaxy S25.1. The company plans to integrate recycled cobalt batteries into more products within its ecosystem, reinforcing its long-term sustainability goals.

This move aligns with the broader tech industry’s shift toward circularity, where materials are continually reused rather than discarded. By scaling up its Circular Battery Supply Chain, Samsung is setting a precedent for more responsible battery production in the future.
