New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra is unlikely to play in the upcoming ODI against South Africa after suffering a head injury during the tri-series match against Pakistan. The all-rounder was struck on the forehead while fielding, causing a deep cut that required stitches. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has confirmed that he will remain under medical observation and follow Head Injury Assessment (HIA) protocols.
Ravindra’s Injury Incident
The incident occurred in the 37th over when Khushdil Shah attempted a slog-sweep off Michael Bracewell. Positioned at deep square leg, Ravindra misjudged the ball’s trajectory and was hit squarely on the forehead. The impact left him dazed, with blood streaming down his face as medical staff rushed onto the field.
A stretcher was initially brought in, but Ravindra managed to walk off with assistance, holding a towel to his head. The Pakistan team doctor, who was closest to the scene, provided immediate medical aid. Despite the injury, NZC assured fans that Ravindra is doing well but will be closely monitored before any decision on his participation in upcoming matches.
NZC’s Statement on Ravindra
Following the match, NZC released a statement confirming Ravindra’s condition.
“Rachin Ravindra sustained a laceration to the forehead after being struck by the ball in yesterday’s ODI tri-series win over Pakistan in Lahore.

Impact on New Zealand’s Lineup
Ravindra had contributed with both bat and ball before his injury. He opened the innings with a quick 25 off 19 balls and bowled three overs. Despite his absence, New Zealand secured a convincing 78-run victory, thanks to Glenn Phillips’ maiden ODI century.
Haris Rauf Suffers Side Strain
Pakistan also faced an injury setback when fast bowler Haris Rauf left the field during his seventh over. He complained of sharp pain in his left side and abdominal muscles, which was later diagnosed as a low-grade side strain. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that Rauf would not bat during the chase.
Champions Trophy Concerns
These injuries come at a crucial time, with the Champions Trophy just 11 days away. New Zealand could also be without fast bowler Lockie Ferguson, who is recovering from a hamstring injury sustained in the ILT20 tournament in the UAE. The team is awaiting scan results to determine his availability.
With the Champions Trophy opener scheduled for February 19 in Karachi, both New Zealand and Pakistan will be hoping for quick recoveries for their key players. New Zealand faces South Africa on Monday, while Pakistan will take on the Proteas on Wednesday in the ongoing tri-series.
