Saudi Arabia has reaffirmed its $500 million commitment to polio eradication, ensuring that 370 million children receive vaccinations annually. This pledge, originally made in April 2024, was highlighted again at the fourth Riyadh International Humanitarian Forum. The funding supports the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in its mission to eliminate the disease worldwide.

A Step Toward a Polio-Free World

The Kingdom’s renewed support reinforces its role in global health efforts. Speaking at the event, H.E. Dr. Abdullah al Rabeeah emphasized the significance of protecting vulnerable children.

He stressed that this funding would safeguard future generations from a preventable disease.

Polio Cases Drop by 99% Since 1988

Since the GPEI’s establishment in 1988, global polio cases have decreased by over 99%. This success is due to the commitment of affected countries, support from GPEI partners, and generous donor contributions.

However, polio remains a global health threat. The World Health Organization (WHO) recently confirmed that poliovirus transmission is still classified as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

Travel Advisory Amid Ongoing Outbreaks

In response to continued poliovirus outbreaks, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a travel advisory. The CDC urges travelers visiting high-risk areas to be fully vaccinated against polio. As of 2025, polio has been detected in 39 countries, making immunization essential for international travelers.

Saudi Arabia’s Role in Global Health

Saudi Arabia’s continued investment in polio eradication reflects its commitment to humanitarian causes. By funding vaccination campaigns, the Kingdom plays a crucial role in protecting millions of children and bringing the world closer to a polio-free future.

With strong international cooperation and sustained funding, the goal of eradicating polio once and for all remains within reach.
