Israel Halts Aid to Gaza Amid Ceasefire Dispute with Hamas

Share the latest news updates

Israel has stopped all humanitarian aid to Gaza until Hamas agrees to extend a US-backed ceasefire deal, further escalating tensions in the region. The decision follows the expiration of the first phase of the truce on Saturday, which had led to the release of hostages and prisoners from both sides.

Ceasefire Extension Rejected

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supports a US plan to extend the truce during Ramadan and Passover, proposing the release of half the remaining Israeli hostages at the start of the deal. Hamas immediately rejected the plan, accusing Israel of breaking a previous agreement and demanding a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

In response, Netanyahu’s office announced that all aid and supplies to Gaza would be blocked until Hamas accepts the ceasefire extension. The statement also warned of further consequences if Hamas continues to reject the proposal, emphasizing that Israel will not agree to a truce without the release of hostages.

Hamas Calls Aid Blockage ‘Blackmail’

Hamas condemned Israel’s move, calling it “cheap blackmail” and a “war crime”, urging mediators to intervene. There has been no confirmation from the Trump administration or US envoy Steve Witkoff on whether Washington supports Israel’s suspension of aid. Qatar and Egypt, key mediators, have also not publicly responded.

Expired Ceasefire Agreement

The first phase of the ceasefire, which began in January, led to the release of 33 Israeli hostages and 1,737 Palestinian prisoners and detainees. The deal allowed increased humanitarian aid into Gaza, but it expired on March 1.

Israel seeks to continue hostage-prisoner exchanges and keep aid flowing, while Hamas insists on negotiations for a permanent ceasefire. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar confirmed that Israel is open to talks about a second phase, but there is “no automatic transition” between phases.

Gaza’s Humanitarian Crisis Worsens

After nearly 17 months of war, Gaza is in ruins, with over 45,000 casualties and millions struggling for survival. The blockade on aid deliveries has triggered a sharp increase in food prices, worsening an already dire humanitarian situation. Aid groups warn that Gaza’s population is highly dependent on humanitarian relief, and any delay in aid could lead to severe shortages of essentials.

Ceasefire at Risk as Violence Resumes

Despite the ceasefire, Israeli military operations inside Gaza have continued, though at a lower intensity. On Sunday, four more Palestinians were reportedly killed. Hamas released a propaganda video featuring Israeli hostages, increasing pressure on the Israeli government to secure their release.

As diplomatic efforts continue, the future of the ceasefire remains uncertain. Both sides remain firm in their positions, making it unclear whether negotiations will resume or if the conflict will escalate once again.
