Google Uses AI to Drive Nature Conservation

Share the latest news updates

Google has launched new AI-driven initiatives to support nature conservation and biodiversity protection. These efforts include a startup accelerator, a grant program for nonprofits, and SpeciesNet, an AI model that identifies animal species from camera trap images. With nature loss threatening over half of the world’s GDP, Google aims to harness technology to mitigate environmental challenges.

AI for Nature and Climate Accelerator

Google introduced the AI for Nature and Climate Accelerator, a 10-week program for startups in North America and Latin America. This initiative supports companies using AI to protect ecosystems, address biodiversity loss, and develop sustainable solutions.

Selected startups receive:

  • Up to $350,000 in Google Cloud credits
  • 30 days of free Cloud TPU access via the TPU Research Cloud platform
  • Expert mentorship from Google professionals
  • Workshops on product design, customer acquisition, and leadership

The accelerator program begins in May 2025, providing a crucial opportunity for early-stage companies to scale their impact.

Grant Funding for AI-Enabled Solutions

Google.org has pledged $3 million to fund AI-driven conservation projects in Brazil. This grant, managed by iCS, will support nonprofits and research institutions working in three key areas:

  1. Biodiversity Protection – Solutions that contribute to the 30×30 global initiative, which aims to protect 30% of Earth’s land and oceans by 2030.
  2. Bioeconomy Development – Supporting sustainable value chains for timber and non-timber forest products.
  3. Regenerative Agriculture – Encouraging eco-friendly farming practices, particularly for small-scale farmers.

According to Robert Little, Head of Sustainability for gTech at Google, this funding will help researchers and conservationists use AI to tackle environmental challenges.

SpeciesNet: AI for Wildlife Monitoring

Google also launched SpeciesNet, an open-source AI model that helps identify animal species through images from camera traps. Conservationists and researchers have been using SpeciesNet via Wildlife Insights, a Google Cloud-based tool, since 2019.

The technology improves biodiversity monitoring, allowing scientists to:

  • Track species populations more efficiently
  • Analyze ecosystems with AI-driven insights
  • Make data-informed conservation decisions

Mike Werner, Head of Sustainability Programs at Google, emphasized that SpeciesNet is now open to developers, researchers, and startups working in conservation. The goal is to enhance biodiversity protection efforts worldwide.

A Step Toward Sustainable AI Innovation

Google’s AI initiatives demonstrate a commitment to environmental sustainability. By investing in startups, nonprofits, and AI-powered wildlife monitoring, the company aims to drive technology-driven conservation efforts. These projects align with global sustainability goals, ensuring AI contributes to a healthier planet.
