RIYADH: Astronomers in Saudi Arabia have predicted that the Shawwal moon will be visible on Saturday evening, March 29, 2025 (Ramadan 29, 1446 Hijri). If confirmed, Eid ul Fitr will be celebrated in the kingdom on Sunday, March 30.
According to Arab media, the new moon is expected to be born at 2:00 PM on March 29. It will be visible for approximately eight minutes after sunset, increasing the likelihood of Eid falling on Sunday.
Suparco Predicts Minimal Chances of Sighting
However, the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) has stated that the chances of sighting the moon on March 29 are low. The commission explained that by sunset in Makkah, the new moon will be only five hours old, making visibility difficult.
Suparco expects the Shawwal crescent to be clearly visible in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East on March 30. If confirmed, Ramadan will extend to 30 days, and Eid ul Fitr will be observed on Monday, March 31.

Saudi Supreme Court Calls for Moon Sighting
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court has urged Muslims across the country to search for the Shawwal moon on Saturday evening. In an official statement, the court encouraged individuals to report any sightings—whether with the naked eye or binoculars—to the nearest court and provide testimony.
Ramadan in Saudi Arabia began on March 1. The final decision regarding Eid ul Fitr will depend on the moon sighting committees and official announcements.
