Pakistan Renews Pledge to UN Peacekeeping at Global Meeting in Islamabad

Pakistan reaffirmed its unwavering support for Pakistan UN peacekeeping efforts during a high-level gathering in Islamabad. On Wednesday, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar met with UN Under Secretary-Generals Jean-Pierre Lacroix and Atul Khare on the sidelines of the UN Peacekeeping Preparatory Meeting. The conference, jointly hosted by Pakistan and South Korea, brought global attention to the evolving needs of international peace operations.

A Proud Legacy of Peacekeeping

During the meeting, Deputy PM Ishaq Dar underscored Pakistan’s historic role and strong commitment to UN peacekeeping missions.

“Peacekeeping is a cornerstone of Pakistan’s foreign policy and international engagement,” Dar stated. “We have always stood by the principles of peace and security, and our troops have served with honor under the UN flag.”

Pakistan ranks among the largest troop-contributing countries to UN peacekeeping operations. Its personnel have served in numerous regions, including Africa, the Middle East, and the Balkans.

Adapting to Modern Challenges

Dar also emphasized the importance of adapting peacekeeping operations to address modern global challenges. He said that evolving conflict dynamics, emerging threats, and technological advancements require fresh strategies and updated frameworks.

He expressed hope that the Islamabad conference would serve as a pivotal platform to refine the global approach to peacekeeping.

Strong Diplomatic Engagement

The presence of high-ranking UN officials at the Islamabad event underlined the international community’s appreciation of Pakistan’s contributions. Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Under Secretary-General for Peace Operations, and Atul Khare, head of the Department of Operational Support (DOS), welcomed Pakistan’s proactive role.

A Platform for Change

The Islamabad Peacekeeping Preparatory Meeting is part of a broader effort to build consensus around reforms to enhance the effectiveness of UN missions. Co-hosted with South Korea, the meeting gathers diplomats, defense officials, and peacekeeping experts from multiple countries to share ideas and propose actionable solutions.

Pakistan’s involvement in organizing such a crucial event reflects its leadership in advocating for a more efficient and inclusive peacekeeping system. The country continues to emphasize the need for equitable burden-sharing, improved training, and better protection for peacekeepers in hostile environments.
