ISLAMABAD – April 20, 2025: A strong earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck several regions of Pakistan on Saturday afternoon, sending panic among residents in Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and Gilgit-Baltistan.

According to the National Seismological Center, the tremor originated near the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border, a seismically active area that often triggers tremors in northern Pakistan. The quake struck at a depth of 94 kilometers, intensifying its reach across multiple cities.

Panic in Major Cities

Residents of Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, Gilgit, and other nearby cities felt the earth shake around 2:35 PM local time. People rushed out of homes, schools, and office buildings as the tremors continued for several seconds. Videos on social media showed individuals reciting the Kalima Tayyaba, seeking safety and comfort.

Eyewitnesses in Lahore and Rawalpindi described the tremors as “strong and sudden,” with ceiling fans swaying and furniture rattling. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, schools were temporarily evacuated as a precautionary measure.

No Loss of Life or Property

Despite the magnitude, no casualties or significant property damage have been reported so far. Emergency services remain on high alert, and rescue units have been deployed across sensitive zones to monitor the situation.

Local authorities, including disaster management authorities in Punjab and KP, have issued advisories urging the public to remain calm and stay alert for potential aftershocks.

Authorities Issue Safety Guidelines

Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) advised residents to stay outdoors during strong tremors and avoid standing near tall buildings or electric poles. People are also advised to keep emergency kits, torches, and essential supplies ready in case of further seismic activity.

Seismic History and Regional Risk

Pakistan lies in a high seismic risk zone, particularly along the Hindu Kush mountain range, which frequently causes deep earthquakes. The region near Afghanistan and Tajikistan, where Saturday’s quake originated, has been a common epicenter for past tremors affecting Pakistan and northern India.

Experts say that earthquakes between 5.0 and 6.0 magnitude can cause damage, especially if the epicenter lies close to populated areas. Fortunately, the epicenter’s distance and depth likely helped in minimizing impact this time.
