Punjab Cabinet Approves Ration Card for 1.5 Million Workers

In a major development to support low-income groups, the Punjab government has approved a comprehensive ration card program for 1.5 million workers. The scheme aims to provide Rs. 10,000 worth of essential goods monthly to registered workers, marking Pakistan’s largest-ever ration assistance initiative.

Key Policy Approvals

The cabinet also amended the Food Grains (Licensing Control) Ordinance, 1957, mandating flour mills to procure at least 25% of their wheat requirements from local farmers. Non-compliance could lead to license cancellation. Additionally, the wheat sector will now undergo deregulation to safeguard farmers’ interests.

Support for Agriculture

Several agriculture-focused initiatives were discussed. The cabinet approved the implementation of the Electronic Warehouse Receipt (EWR) System, allowing farmers to store wheat at government expense. The Chief Minister emphasized that research benefits should directly reach the farmers.

Infrastructure and Transport

Punjab’s mass transit systems received a boost under the CM’s “Vision T-30.”

Healthcare and Education

 The cabinet also greenlit the establishment of Pakistan’s first Nawaz Sharif Early Education Centre of Excellence at the Children’s Library Complex, Lahore.

Labour and Social Welfare

The draft of the Punjab Labour Code 2024 was passed, expanding coverage to workers in agriculture, construction, and other sectors. Amendments to social security laws, including the Punjab Workers Welfare Fund Act and the Provincial Workers Social Security Ordinance, aim to broaden welfare access. Appointment of wage inspectors under the Punjab Minimum Wage Act 2019 was also authorized
