Hamilton, Canada: The United Nations has called on both India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint after a deadly terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir claimed at least 26 lives. The appeal comes amid rising tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

UN Condemns Attack, Warns Against Escalation

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric addressed reporters during a Thursday briefing, expressing deep concern over the situation. He confirmed that UN Secretary-General António Guterres is closely monitoring developments.

“We were very clear in our condemnation of the terror attack that occurred in Jammu and Kashmir on the 22nd, which killed a large number of civilians,” said Dujarric.

He stressed that the UN strongly opposes any form of terrorism, especially attacks targeting civilians.

No Direct Contact Yet, But Situation Under Watch

While Guterres has not spoken directly to either the Indian or Pakistani governments in the last 24 hours, the UN is keeping a close eye on diplomatic and military developments in the region.

“The Secretary-General has not had any direct contact with those governments in the past 24 hours, but he is following the situation very closely and with very great concern,” Dujarric stated.

UN Calls for Dialogue and Peaceful Engagement

Dujarric reiterated the UN’s long-standing stance that all issues between Pakistan and India must be resolved through dialogue and peaceful means. He urged both sides to avoid any actions that could worsen the situation.

“We encourage both governments to exercise maximum restraint and to ensure that the developments we’ve seen do not deteriorate any further.”

“Any issues between Pakistan and India, we believe can be and should be resolved peacefully through meaningful mutual engagement,” he added.

Kashmir Tensions Spark Fears of Regional Instability

The latest attack in Jammu and Kashmir has heightened tensions in an already fragile region. Past incidents have shown how quickly violence in Kashmir can lead to diplomatic standoffs, border skirmishes, or even military escalations between the two countries.

Observers fear that if not handled with care, the recent violence could derail regional stability.

International Community Urged to Promote Peace

With both India and Pakistan holding significant strategic importance in South Asia, the UN has urged the international community to support efforts aimed at de-escalation and peace-building.

Guterres has often emphasized diplomatic dialogue as the only viable path to long-term peace in the region.

UN’s Message Clear: Restraint, Accountability, and Dialogue

As the situation continues to unfold, the United Nations stands firm in its call for calm, accountability, and cooperation.

The global body has made it clear that peaceful resolution remains the only sustainable solution for the decades-old conflict between India and Pakistan, especially when civilian lives are at stake.
