India floods: people are missing and feared dead

After a glacier fell into a dam and created a massive flood in northern India, hundreds of individuals are missing and presumed dead.

A deluge of water caused the broken dam to spill into a valley in the state of Uttarakhand.

At least three bodies have been found and 150 people are registered as missing, a police spokesman told the AFP news agency.

The emergency team managed to rescue 16 workers who were trapped inside a rubble-filled tunnel. In a video released by India’s ANI news agency, some of the workers being carried out are seen.

Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Trivendra Singh Rawat, said teams from the police and the army were “doing their best to save the lives of the workers”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who wrote on Twitter shortly following the speaking with the state minister, claimed to be monitoring the incident. “The nation prays for everyone’s safety there,”
