The state of Texas in America has filed a case against Google as it has been using the biometric data of its customer without their knowing.

The attorney general of Texas, Ken Paxton sued Google stating that it has unlawfully stored and used the personal information of Texans without their consent.

It is said that Google has used the voice prints, biometric data, and records of facial geometry for its commercial use in the form of Google photos, Google assistant and Nest Hub etc.

Texas sued Google because of the violation of its law known as the Biometric Identifier Act. The Texas law states that one cannot use anyone’s biometric information without consent. And if the information is used unlawfully, then an amount worth $25ooo will be paid as a penalty.

On the other hand, Google claimed that Attorney general Ken Paxton is trying to sabotage its image, and that Google will prove in the court that it hasn’t violated any law.

However, Paxton continued to say, “Google’s indiscriminate collection of the personal information of Texans, including very sensitive information like biometric identifiers, will not be tolerated,”

He also added, “I will continue to fight Big Tech to ensure the privacy and security of all Texans.”

It is Not the First Time. A Lawsuit was Filed Earlier as well

It is not the first time that Google has been sued by the Attorney general of Texas, Ken Paxton. It also happened earlier in January 2022.

Paxton filed a lawsuit against google for violating the Consumer Protection Act. It said that Google had been using misleading endorsements and practices for its commercial purposes.

This lawsuit was filed because Google was going to launch its own brand smartphone Pixel 4 and was advertising it all over Texas. Google even gave scripted ads to people, so that they can review the product and give positive feedback.

However, Google didn’t hand the product directly to influencers. It just gave them a script to practice and endorse. The people who were advertising weren’t happy with this practice and claimed that it was misleading.

Paxton said, “I will make sure they are held accountable for their misleading business practices.”
