Karachi to Get 100 MGD Water by August 2025: Mayor Murtaza Wahab

87% Work on New Hub Canal Completed

Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, announced that Karachi will receive 100 million gallons per day (MGD) of water by August 2025. He shared this update during a visit to the Hub area to inspect the ongoing construction of the new canal. The project, aimed at increasing the city’s water supply, is 87% complete.

The new canal is part of the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) initiative to address Karachi’s longstanding water shortage. The current canal, built 45 to 46 years ago, has suffered from leaks and spillages, reducing its capacity to deliver the required 100 MGD.

To resolve this issue, the Sindh government has invested in constructing a new canal. Once operational, it will boost the water supply to over 100 MGD, benefiting millions of Karachi residents.

Mayor Confident About Completion Timeline

Mayor Wahab expressed confidence in the timely completion of the project. He assured citizens that the canal will be fully functional by August 2025, enhancing Karachi’s water infrastructure and alleviating supply problems.

Karachi Water Corporation Seeks $4 Billion Investment

Last month, Engineer Syed Salahuddin Ahmed, CEO of Karachi Water Corporation, highlighted the need for significant investment to modernize the city’s water and sewage systems. He stated that a $4 billion investment is essential for upgrading Karachi’s aging infrastructure.

Ahmed shared these concerns during a meeting with a high-level Austrian delegation at the Water Corporation’s head office. The delegation included Austrian Trade Commissioner Johannes Brenner and Gerald Eder, CEO of Vienna-based Hydrophil.

Collaboration with Austria on Water Management

The Austrian delegation discussed potential collaboration to improve Karachi’s water sector. Ahmed briefed the visitors on recent reforms and ongoing efforts to upgrade the water supply and sewage management systems under the corporation’s new administration.

Hydrophil representatives showed interest in the corporation’s initiatives and shared insights on modern water management practices. The meeting also explored potential avenues for foreign investment in Karachi’s water infrastructure.

Efforts to Modernize Karachi’s Water Systems

The Karachi Water Corporation is actively working on reforms to ensure efficient water distribution and sewage management. These efforts are part of a broader plan to modernize the city’s water systems and address the growing demand from its population.

With the completion of the new canal and increased international collaboration, Karachi’s water infrastructure is set for a major overhaul. Authorities hope these initiatives will bring long-term relief to residents and resolve the city’s chronic water issues.
