Removal of Imran Khan as PTI Chief

The Lahore High Court (LHC) reserves its verdict on the plea seeking the removal of Imran Khan as PTI Chief.

In October, PTI leader Imran Khan was disqualified by ECP on the reference of Toshakhana under the Article (63) (p).

The ECP also de-notified him as MNA from NA-95 following the disqualification.

ECP ruled Imran Khan out stating that the former premier made ‘false statements’ and ‘incorrect statements’ regarding the gifts he received.

In November, a plea was presented in the Lahore High Court.

The plea argued that according to People Representation Act 1976 and Political Parties Order in 2002, it is required that the representatives of political parties must be qualified according to the constitution.

Justice Muhammad Sajid Mehmood Sethi presided over the hearing to decide whether the plea was admissible for further proceedings.

The petition argued that after the disqualification of Imran Khan from NA-95, he should be de-notified from the position of PTI’s chairmanship.

The lawyer continued with the petition that a disqualified person cannot hold party’s chairmanship under the Political Parties Order in 2002.

He also mentioned that Imran Khan is violating the law and constitution by staying as the Party leader after disqualification.

Twitter to Lose Its Active Users?

Elon Musk, the Tesla chief executive, once tweeted, “is Twitter dying?’ in April before buying the extensively popular social media platform.

But his words are becoming a reality. It has been found that many celebrities have been ghosting their accounts.

The research team of twitter observed a decline in the active users or ‘heavy tweeters’. The heavy tweeters are important for Twitter because they generate 90% of the revenue on Twitter. But there has been a decline in their numbers.

A heavy tweeter is someone who logs into twitter three to four times a week and makes more than four tweets a week. The researchers suggest that there has been a shift in interests over the past years among English users, which is why they have been using less Twitter.

It was also observed that instead of Twitter, English users have developed more interest in ‘cryptocurrency’ and ‘pornography’. However, Twitter has been unable to keep track of its English users and how often they tweet. Researchers suggest that it’s important to know about the proportion of users for the platform’s growth.

However, Twitter is unable to highlight why the numbers are declining. A spokesperson of Twitter said, “We regularly conduct research on a wide variety of trends, which evolve based on what’s happening in the world. Our overall audience has continued to grow, reaching 238 million in 2022,”

Pakistan Government in Dilemma Over RLNG

Winters are around the corner and the government is in dilemma over the diversion of costly imported RLNG to domestic consumers in winter.

There is already high inflation and a gas deficit is on the way as well. The government is trying to determine a quantity that it should divert to domestic consumers during the winter.

It is observed that in the previous years, LNG was imported and Rs. 108 billion worth of LNG was diverted to domestic consumers. However, the cost of it is still yet to be recovered. The government only paid Rs. 66 billion to Pakistan LNG Limited (PLL) and the remaining are yet to be paid.

An official of the Energy Ministry said, “The country’s gas sector is already soaked in mammoth circular debt of Rs1,500 billion owing to which it has become unsustainable like the power sector facing Rs2,500 billion circular debts. And during this winter, the government is inclined to inject LNG of 250-350mmcfd into the domestic sector to cater to the energy needs of the domestic sector. This will cost the government another Rs110 billion,”

The government is also in dilemma regarding the subsidies for RLNG, however, an amount worth Rs.19 billion will be used for that purpose. The official added, “Still, we have Rs19 billion to finance the subsidy, which is much less if the government diverts RLNG to the domestic sector during the coming winter season,”

The government is in the process of deciding on the matter that the cost of RLNG will not be recovered from domestic consumers.

The company officials and authorities have also discussed that there would be a gas deficit of 1-1.2 billion cubic feet per day, in January. For that purpose, gas will be closed down for the industry sector and CNG and the export will be halved. Moreover, the price of an LPG cylinder will be Rs. 2300 per cylinder.

Pakistan’s Risk of Default Rise to 52.8%

Pakistan is at the risk of being declared as a default nation by credit default swap (CDS) based on its performance in five years.

During the Covid-19 outbreak, the CDS was just around 5% to 6% only. But it has gradually increased over time. Earlier this year, it also peaked rise at 30% when there was uncertainty revolving around revival of International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme.

However, lately it has been rising at a much higher pace, as the debt has been increasing and the returns are not being paid timely. Also, the foreign investors are losing their faith in Pakistan’s economy and they feel that Pakistan will not be able to repay the maturing debt.

Pakistan is due to return $1 billion to the foreign investors. The country’s foreign exchange reserves have also been depleting with only $9 billion left. This has created an alarming situation for Pakistan.
