Trump Warns India Over Russian Oil Imports

US-India trade tensions escalated sharply after former President Donald Trump vowed to impose even higher tariffs on Indian goods. Speaking at a press event, Trump criticized India’s continued oil imports from Russia, calling them a challenge to American sanctions and a threat to US foreign policy. India, in response, defended its right to protect its economic interests and rejected the pressure, intensifying the diplomatic standoff.

Trump’s Warning to India

Trump claimed India has “gone too far” by maintaining close energy ties with Moscow. He accused the Indian government of undermining Western unity by purchasing discounted Russian crude oil. “If India thinks it can do business with our enemies and enjoy the benefits of our markets at the same time, they’re mistaken,” Trump said. He added that his administration would look into significantly increasing tariffs on Indian exports.

Trump’s warning reflects growing concern in Washington over New Delhi’s balancing act between Western allies and strategic ties with Russia. His statement also signals a hardening stance ahead of the US presidential elections, where trade and foreign policy have taken center stage.

India’s Firm Response

India swiftly responded to Trump’s remarks. Officials in New Delhi emphasized that their energy strategy is guided by national interests and that oil purchases from Russia remain legal under international law. “We will continue to safeguard our economic sovereignty,” said an Indian foreign ministry spokesperson.

Indian officials pointed to the volatility of global energy markets and stressed that India’s partnerships are built on economic logic, not politics. They also reiterated that India had increased trade with the US in recent years and that punitive tariffs could backfire by straining bilateral ties.

Kremlin Reacts, Calls Threat Illegal

Reacting to Trump’s statements, the Kremlin described the threat of sanctions or tariffs against India as “illegal and coercive.” Moscow expressed support for India’s energy decisions and praised New Delhi’s “independent and sovereign” foreign policy. A Kremlin spokesperson stated, “Such pressure tactics violate the principles of international trade and diplomacy.”

Russia and India have deepened their energy and defense cooperation in recent years, especially after the start of the Ukraine conflict. India has emerged as one of the top buyers of discounted Russian oil, helping to stabilize Russia’s economy amid Western sanctions.

Japan Pushes for Auto Deal

While US-India tensions took the spotlight, Japan’s top trade envoy arrived in Washington to press for finalizing an auto industry agreement. Tokyo has long sought better market access and reduced tariffs on Japanese vehicles. The envoy is expected to meet key US trade officials this week to push for concessions.

Japan’s efforts signal a broader push by US allies in Asia to shore up trade relations amid growing uncertainty around American trade policy under a potential second Trump term.

South Korea Talks Still Stalled

Meanwhile, trade talks between the US and South Korea remain unresolved. Key issues include digital services, subsidies for electric vehicles, and labor standards. South Korean negotiators expressed hope that ongoing discussions would yield progress, but no concrete breakthroughs have been reported.

Analysts suggest that Seoul is adopting a cautious approach, hoping to avoid a public clash while ensuring its industries remain competitive under any new US trade regime.

Canada and Mexico to Discuss Trade Stability

On another front, Canadian ministers are scheduled to visit Mexico City this week to hold discussions with Mexican counterparts. The talks will focus on maintaining the integrity of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), particularly in light of rising protectionist rhetoric in the US.

Canada and Mexico have voiced concerns about potential disruptions if Trump’s proposed tariff policies return. They are expected to explore contingency plans to preserve market stability and avoid supply chain disruptions across North America.

Global Trade at a Crossroads

As tensions grow between the US and key partners like India, experts warn of rising uncertainty in global trade. Trump’s aggressive rhetoric may appeal to parts of the American electorate, but it risks alienating vital economic allies. Countries like India, Japan, and Canada are now actively seeking ways to hedge against US policy swings.

The coming months could prove critical in shaping how major economies recalibrate their trade and diplomatic strategies in response to evolving US positions.
