UK and Iraq Sign Security Pact to Combat People Smuggling

A pivotal security pact aimed at tackling people-smuggling networks has been signed between the UK and Iraq. Moreover, this agreement strengthens border cooperation and targets the criminal organizations profiting from irregular migration, reflecting a significant step in combating the global crisis of human trafficking.

Strengthening Cross-Border Cooperation

During a visit to Baghdad and the Kurdistan region, British Home Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized the need for international collaboration to combat organized crime. “Smuggler gangs profit from dangerous small boat crossings, with networks stretching from northern France through Germany and into the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and beyond,” Cooper stated. Furthermore, she highlighted that addressing organized immigration crime requires cooperation beyond national borders, given the increasingly global nature of the issue.

Iraqi Interior Minister Abdul Amir al-Shammari joined Cooper in signing the joint security statement, which aims to curb the influence of smuggling gangs operating across multiple countries.

Key Components of the Security Pact

The agreement includes several initiatives to enhance border security and law enforcement capabilities:

Funding and Training: The UK will provide up to £300,000 ($380,000) to train Iraqi law enforcement officers in border security, focusing on organized immigration crime and narcotics.
Support for the Kurdistan Region: An additional £200,000 ($254,000) will fund projects in the Kurdistan region, including the creation of a new task force dedicated to combating irregular migration and improving border enforcement.
Combatting Misinformation: A communications campaign will launch to counter the false narratives and myths spread online by people-smuggling networks, aimed at discouraging potential migrants from embarking on dangerous journeys.

A Coordinated Effort Against Organized Crime

Cooper stressed that criminal networks operate seamlessly across borders, requiring law enforcement agencies to adopt a similarly integrated approach. “Organized criminals operate across borders, so law enforcement needs to operate across borders too,” she said. The security pact between the UK and Iraq is described as the most comprehensive operational package ever established between the two countries to address organized crime and human trafficking.

This agreement is part of a broader UK effort to curb irregular migration and prevent the tragic consequences of human trafficking.
