Karachi: The Indian government has detained at least 75 political leaders and activists in Occupied Kashmir after the success of a coalition of regional political parties in local elections.
According to a report by the foreign news agency Reuters, the district council elections ended earlier this week which was the first such election since Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government revoked the special status of the Indian-controlled Muslim-majority region last year.
New Delhi then cracked down on the opposition and detained hundreds of people in a bid to quell the protests and violence.
A senior police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the arrested people are including separatist leaders and members of the banned Jamaat-e-Islami group.
