Godzilla vs. Kong was nothing short of a miracle as the box office roared back to life after more than a year of lackluster opening weekends.
According to Deadline, the huge Warner Bros. mash-up grossed $32.2 million in its three-day weekend, the highest of the pandemic’s history, and $48.5 million in the first five days.
The Adam Wingard-directed film was also a success internationally, grossing $236.9 million in 12 days for a worldwide total of $285.4 million.
While the figures may have been considered poor in another period, particularly with a reported budget of $160 million, they far surpassed Warner Bros.’ expectations.
It also poses the likelihood that moviegoers will be able to return to theaters following a lengthy pause triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic.
