HamzaHumza Yousaf, a practising Muslim of Pakistani origin, has made history by being elected as the leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP), becoming Scotland’s first Muslim leader.

Yousaf, who is currently the Health Secretary of Scotland, won a close-fought contest against Kate Forbes and Ash Regan to succeed former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

Yousaf was born in Glasgow, Scotland, but his grandparents had emigrated from Punjab, Pakistan, in 1962.

The newly PM studied politics at the University of Glasgow and made history by becoming the youngest-ever member of Parliament in 2011.

He has faced criticism for his performance as Transport Minister and Health Secretary, but Yousaf defended himself by stating that some issues were not unique to Scotland.

Yousaf will be formally nominated as the First Minister by the Scottish Parliament and will be sworn in at the Court of Session on Wednesday.
