In a significant development, former Pakistan President Dr. Arif Alvi has revealed that the incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder, Imran Khan, would prefer to remain behind bars rather than striking any deals.

Arif Alvi emphasized that “real freedom” can only be achieved through self-respecting leadership that refuses to compromise.

Here are the key points from Alvi’s statement:

  • No Compromise on Principles: Alvi, addressing lawyers at the Sialkot district bar, highlighted that Imran Khan prioritizes the supremacy of the Constitution. Despite facing challenges, Khan remains optimistic about finding a way out of the prevailing political crisis.
  • Rejecting Offers: Alvi confirmed that Imran Khan was given “many offers,” but he steadfastly rejected them all. The PTI founder’s commitment to his principles takes precedence over any potential deal.
  • Constitutional Solution: Alvi stressed that dialogue is the only way forward. He insisted that there can be no end to political uncertainty without finding a “constitutional” solution. According to him, “only civilians can rule Pakistan.”
  • Accidental Democracy: Alvi characterized the formation of the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N)-led coalition government as an “accidental democracy” in Pakistan.
  • May 9 Riots: Alvi cautioned against making unilateral decisions regarding responsibility for the May 9 riots. He asserted that the PTI has evidence related to the events.
  • International Relations: Alvi welcomed high-level Saudi Arabia delegates scheduled to arrive in Pakistan and reaffirmed PTI’s support for the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
