Karachi: As the monsoon season continues to sweep across various regions of Pakistan, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast scattered drizzle and rain for Karachi this evening or night. The port city is expected to experience a mix of weather conditions, with the temperature remaining hot and humid over the next 24 hours.
According to the PMD, Karachi’s weather will stay warm, with maximum temperatures expected to hover between 34°C to 36°C. The city is also grappling with high humidity levels at around 78%, and the winds are blowing at a speed of 14 kilometers per hour. The minimum temperature recorded in Karachi earlier today was 28.5°C.
While the day is expected to be hot and sticky, relief might come in the form of rain later in the day. The Met Office has warned that these weather changes are part of a larger monsoon system impacting the region. Karachi, along with other parts of Sindh, is on alert for potential showers ranging from light drizzles to heavy downpours from Tuesday through Thursday.
The PMD representative Owais Haider mentioned that suburban areas of Karachi are likely to see rainfall starting today. However, he also issued a cautionary note regarding the potential for urban flooding, as this upcoming rain spell could be the most intense the city has experienced this monsoon season.
Monsoon Alert Issued
The PMD has also issued a monsoon alert, indicating that the weather system is being driven by a deep depression currently situated over east Rajasthan in India. This depression has been moving west-southwestward and is expected to reach the regions of Kutch, Tharparkar, and the adjacent Arabian Sea by the morning of August 29. As a result, strong monsoon currents are beginning to penetrate into southeast Sindh, including Karachi.
The Met Office has stated that from August 27 to 31, Karachi Division could experience wind-thunderstorms along with rain, ranging from scattered heavy showers to isolated very heavy falls. The weather pattern is expected to bring occasional gaps in the rainfall, providing brief periods of dry weather.
In addition to Karachi, other districts in Sindh are also expected to be affected by this monsoon system. Areas including Tharparkar, Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, Hyderabad, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allah Yar, Mitiari, Umerkot, Mirpur Khas, Sanghar, Jamshoro, Dadu, Kambar Shahdadkot, Larkana, Naushahro Feroze, and Shaheed Benazirabad are likely to experience showers until August 31. The rain is anticipated to occur intermittently, with occasional dry spells in between.
Moreover, the districts of Ghotki, Sukkur, Khairpur, Kashmore, Jacobabad, and Shikarpur are also on alert for rainfall from today until August 30. The PMD has advised residents of these areas to stay vigilant as the weather system unfolds, given the possibility of heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding in some regions.
As Karachi braces for potential rain, city officials and emergency services are likely to be on high alert to manage any challenges that might arise due to the weather. Citizens are also encouraged to take precautions, particularly in low-lying areas prone to water accumulation and flooding. The monsoon season continues to pose significant challenges for Karachi and other parts of Sindh, making preparedness crucial in mitigating the impact of these weather events.
