Comedian and television host Bassem Youssef returned to X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday to explain his brief absence from the platform. Known for his sharp wit and commentary, Youssef recently gained attention for his views on Israel’s assault on Gaza.

Youssef clarified that he deactivated his account after receiving concerning messages. These messages suggested a possible hack and raised fears about being doxxed. To protect himself and others, Youssef decided to deactivate the account and investigate the issue. “I only take these issues seriously if it concerns other people, not me,” Youssef said.

After his account was deactivated, rumors and speculation about his disappearance spread quickly. Youssef admitted that his initial announcement lacked clarity, which contributed to the confusion.

Security Threats

Youssef also revealed that dealing with potential security threats took a significant toll on him. He faced personal and health challenges, leading to severe burnout. This situation forced him to cancel several appearances, including local comedy shows, and halt promotions for upcoming events, impacting him financially.

The burnout and safety concerns led Youssef to take a break from all social media. This decision, though necessary, unintentionally fueled confusion among his followers. “I was disconnected from social media so I didn’t realize the level of chaos that surrounded this, although I only just stopped posting on social media for literally seven days,” he clarified.

Now back on X, Youssef assured his followers that he will resume regular posting. He hinted at upcoming content, including a new video set to be released tonight. “I will still post parts of my interviews plus original videos in Arabic and English to go deeper behind the information and discussions I have in these interviews. Starting with a video in the next 24 hours. It’s something I have been working on right before the disconnection,” he said.

X Explained the Technical Issue

Youssef thanked his supporters for their patience and apologized for his absence and lack of responsiveness. In a follow-up post, he mentioned that his follower count had dropped to zero. X later explained that this was a technical issue and that the numbers would return to normal soon. Youssef encouraged his followers to check his pinned post for more details on why he deactivated his account.

With his return to social media, Youssef aims to reconnect with his audience and continue sharing his engaging content.
