RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir addressed a special ceremony held at General Headquarters (GHQ) Rawalpindi, commemorating Defence and Martyrs Day. The event honored the sacrifices of fallen heroes who defended Pakistan’s sovereignty during critical times.

During his address, General Asim Munir praised the immense sacrifices made by the martyrs in the fight against terrorism and for safeguarding national security. He highlighted that these sacrifices have played a pivotal role in ensuring stability within the country. “The martyrs’ sacrifices have secured the nation from the menace of terrorism and safeguarded our security,” he said, emphasizing the vital role the armed forces continue to play in maintaining peace.

General Munir also highlighted the unwavering bond between the military and the people of Pakistan. “The relationship between the armed forces and the nation is one of the heart,” he said. “The people of Pakistan have always stood by their army, whether in times of natural disasters, foreign aggression, or in the war against terrorism.” He acknowledged the public’s constant support and reiterated that this unity has been instrumental in overcoming the challenges faced by the country.

The ceremony, which was attended by key dignitaries, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, federal ministers, and other notable figures, paid tribute to the martyrs of the 1965 war. This significant battle, fought between Pakistan and India, began when Indian forces crossed the international border under the cover of darkness on September 6, 1965, attempting to breach Pakistan’s defense lines.

The COAS reminded attendees of the bravery displayed by Pakistani soldiers during the 1965 war, especially in the border areas of Lahore, Sialkot, and Sindh. “The enemy launched a full-scale attack, but the Pakistani forces and the nation stood united to protect the sovereignty of the country,” he stated. The relentless battle continued until both sides accepted a ceasefire brokered by the United Nations (UN) on September 22, 1965.

The Defence and Martyrs Day, celebrated annually on September 6, serves as a reminder of the resilience and dedication of Pakistan’s military forces. It also marks the day when Pakistan thwarted the nefarious designs of a more powerful enemy, showcasing the strength of unity and determination.

The ceremony concluded with prayers for the martyrs and their families, and a renewed pledge from the armed forces to defend Pakistan’s integrity and sovereignty at all costs. The presence of the country’s leadership underscored the significance of the occasion and the collective responsibility to honor those who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
