Hezbollah to Choose New Secretary-General Amid Israeli Conflict

Qassem said Israel has not damaged Hezbollah’s military capabilities.

Hezbollah’s deputy chief, Sheikh Naim Qassem, announced on Monday that the group is prepared for an Israeli ground offensive. Despite the recent killing of its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, and several senior commanders, Qassem expressed confidence in the group’s strength.

During a public address, Qassem said Israel has not damaged Hezbollah’s military capabilities. He emphasized that Hezbollah’s operations continue at full capacity and more, despite the bombardment of Lebanon in recent days. He also assured that the group will soon choose a new leader through internal mechanisms, though he did not provide further details.

“If Israel wants a ground incursion, we are ready for that,” Qassem declared, reinforcing the group’s defiance. He accused Israel of targeting civilians, including children and the elderly, and committing massacres across Lebanon.

Qassem also criticized the United States, claiming it is a partner in Israel’s aggression through military and political support. He concluded by stating that Hezbollah will win, just as it did in 2006.

Who is Sheikh Naim Qassem?

Sheikh Naim Qassem has served as Hezbollah’s deputy secretary-general since 1991. He was appointed under Hezbollah’s late leader Abbas al-Musawi, who was killed by Israel in 1992, and continued in the role under Nasrallah. A veteran figure in the group, Qassem has been a prominent spokesman for Hezbollah for decades.

Born in 1953 in Beirut, he has been actively involved in the group’s political and military activities and led Hezbollah’s parliamentary election campaigns since 1992. His roots in Lebanese Shi’ite politics run deep, beginning with his involvement in the Amal Movement in the 1970s before joining Hezbollah. Qassem is married with six children.
