Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Gohar Ali Khan has raised serious concerns about the current government’s authority to amend the Constitution. Speaking to media Khan expressed doubts about the government’s legitimacy to push through constitutional changes.
“We believe that this government does not have the power to amend the Constitution,” Khan stated, emphasizing PTI’s stance on the matter. His remarks come as discussions about potential constitutional amendments gain momentum, with political parties weighing in on the government’s proposals.
PTI’s Stand on Security Meeting
While the controversy over constitutional amendments grows, PTI is also engaged in discussions around national security. Khan disclosed that PTI had already decided to attend a key meeting on security issues. He suggested to the Speaker of the National Assembly that the military leadership should provide an in-camera briefing to Parliament.
“This proposal was ours,” Khan clarified, “but we have not received an invitation letter yet. The meeting is scheduled for tomorrow. If we receive the invitation in time, Tehreek-e-Insaaf will participate.”
The meeting is of crucial importance, and PTI’s participation hinges on receiving the formal invitation, which has yet to be delivered. Khan’s comments indicate PTI’s willingness to engage in national security matters, but he stressed the need for formal procedures to be followed.

Concerns About Constitutional Amendments
In addition to the security meeting, Gohar Ali Khan touched on the issue of constitutional amendments. He criticized the government for not providing any support in drafting a new constitutional amendment. According to him, the government has failed to involve PTI in the amendment process.
“We have a difference on the procedure of constitutional amendment,” Khan stated. “We have asked the government to share the draft with us, but they have not done so.”
He highlighted that PTI’s main concern lies in the procedure and lack of transparency in the amendment process. PTI insists that any constitutional changes should be discussed and debated openly among all political stakeholders.

Protection of Assembly Members
Chairman PTI also voiced concerns over the protection of assembly members and how constitutional amendments could affect their security. He stressed that PTI is committed to safeguarding the interests of its members in Parliament.
“We are protecting our assembly members,” Khan said, adding that any attempt to push forward with a constitutional amendment without proper consensus could jeopardize the security of the members of the House.
He warned against amendments that could endanger the stability of Parliament. “There should be no constitutional amendment if the Parliament is to move forward.”
Gohar Ali Khan’s remarks reflect PTI’s cautious approach toward any changes in the Constitution, particularly in light of the government’s perceived lack of authority. He called for open dialogue and transparency, ensuring that any amendments align with the security and stability of Parliament.
In conclusion, PTI’s participation in national security discussions and its firm stance on constitutional amendments underscore the party’s concerns about the government’s decision-making process.
