Snapchat is expanding its new “Footsteps” feature to all iOS users this week. Initially, the company limited this feature to Snapchat+ subscribers. The announcement came on Monday, confirming that Footsteps will now be accessible to a broader audience.
This innovative feature uses Snap Map to track users’ travels. It displays how much of the world users have explored, according to a report by TechCrunch. When users activate Footsteps for the first time, it pulls data from their Snaps saved in Memories. This process helps calculate their previous travel activity.

Real-Time Location Data
Moving forward, the feature relies on real-time location data. It provides personalized travel footprints on the map, allowing users to see their journey visually. To use Footsteps, users need to have Snap Map’s Ghost Mode turned off. Importantly, the feature is private by default. Only the user can view their tracked movements. Additionally, it allows users to turn off tracking or clear their travel data anytime via their profile settings.
Snapchat’s push to enhance Snap Map sets it apart from competitors like Instagram and TikTok. Both platforms currently lack a similar feature. However, Instagram has announced that it is working on a “Friends Map” to enhance its location-sharing capabilities.
In exciting news for Android users, Snapchat confirmed that Footsteps will soon be available on that platform as well. This expansion reflects Snapchat’s commitment to improving user experience and engagement through innovative features.
