A group of 99 American doctors and medical professionals who volunteered in Gaza have called for an end to U.S. support for Israel. In a letter sent to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, they shared their experiences, stating they found no evidence of Hamas activity in Gaza’s hospitals. These healthcare workers, who collectively spent 254 weeks in Gaza, detailed the severe humanitarian crisis there, urging the U.S. government to halt military, economic, and diplomatic backing for Israel.

The letter described the devastation of Gaza’s healthcare system, accusing Israel of systematically targeting medical facilities. They reported witnessing suffering on a massive scale, including malnourished children and a severe lack of essential medical supplies. The doctors also referenced a study suggesting that the death toll from Israel’s military actions could exceed 186,000.

Babies Dying Due to Malnutrition

One pediatric nurse, Asma Taha, shared heart-wrenching stories of babies dying due to malnutrition. Another doctor, Mark Perlmutter, described the horror of holding a baby’s brain after it had been injured. The group emphasized that Israel’s treatment of Gaza’s population, including the displacement of malnourished people, could not be seen as accidental.

In their plea to the U.S. government, the doctors called for an arms embargo on both Israel and Palestinian groups until a ceasefire is reached. They also demanded the reopening of Gaza’s Rafah crossing to allow humanitarian aid. The signatories requested a meeting with Biden and Harris to discuss their findings and urged a shift in U.S. policy towards the Middle East.

The letter concluded by condemning the continued violence in Gaza, pointing out that Israel’s ongoing military actions have caused the deaths of tens of thousands of Palestinians, most of them women and children. They noted that Israel is facing accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice for its actions in Gaza.
