ISLAMABAD: Mobile phone services in Rawalpindi and Islamabad remained suspended for the third consecutive day on Sunday, as unrest continued due to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protests in the federal capital. The suspension caused significant disruption, leaving residents frustrated and disconnected.
In several areas, including Sri Nagar Highway, Zero Point, and Faisal Avenue, containers were still in place. These roadblocks have been set up as part of security measures. While the Faizabad Interchange partially reopened, movement through the area remained slow and difficult. The increased security presence, especially in Rawalpindi, contributed to delays for commuters.
Punjab police officers have been stationed at key points in Rawalpindi, further raising the security level across the garrison city. The deployment aimed to prevent further unrest as PTI protests persisted. The continued road closures complicated daily life for residents of Islamabad, making it difficult for them to travel and commute.
Businesses Remain Closed as Protests Halt Trade in Islamabad
In addition to the roadblocks, businesses and trade activities in the federal capital remained shut. The city’s bustling markets, usually teeming with activity, were eerily quiet as a result of the ongoing protests. Over 500 Arrested, Including KP Police Officers and Afghan Nationals
On Saturday, Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi made startling claims regarding the arrests made during the protests. He revealed that 564 people had been arrested in Islamabad, including 11 officers from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police and 120 Afghan nationals. According to Naqvi, the KP police officers had reportedly joined the PTI protests. The presence of Afghan nationals among the detainees raised concerns about outside influence and involvement in the protests.
The arrests were part of a larger crackdown by the government on the PTI demonstrators, who have been rallying against the government in Islamabad and Lahore. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party has been organizing protests demanding the independence of the judiciary. Tensions escalated after PTI’s leadership called for nationwide protests starting on October 1, with the capital city as the central hub of their demonstrations.
