Andrew Garfield recently shared his initial doubts during his audition for The Amazing Spider-Man on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. He admitted feeling “too old” to convincingly play Peter Parker, a high schooler, since he was 25 or 26 at the time. Garfield worried his age would work against him. “I felt I was too old,” he said, even though he knew he had “good genes.”

Despite these concerns, Garfield was surprised when he was offered a screen test. During this process, he credited his acting coach, Greta Seacat, for helping him shift his mindset. Seacat advised him to approach the screen test with a carefree attitude, as if it “doesn’t f—ing matter.” She suggested treating it like making a short film with high school friends. This change in perspective helped Garfield relax and act more naturally.

Garfield recalled how this new approach gave him emotional freedom. “I remember that feeling of ‘I don’t give a f—,’” he said, highlighting how important it was to let go of the pressure and enjoy the moment. This relaxed attitude ultimately helped him deliver a strong performance, leading to him being cast as Spider-Man.

Although his portrayal of Spider-Man was brief, it had a lasting impact on the franchise. He starred in The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 before his run ended. However, Garfield returned as Spider-Man in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which grossed $1.9 billion globally. His return excited fans, cementing his status as a beloved Spider-Man actor.

When asked if he would return to the character, Garfield expressed interest. In an interview with Esquire, he said he would “100%” consider it if the project offered a fresh and exciting challenge. It would need to be a story that felt unique to him.

Despite the ups and downs of his Spider-Man journey, Garfield’s love for the character remains clear. Fans also continue to celebrate his portrayal, especially after his return in No Way Home. With the success of that film, many are eager to see him suit up again.

As Garfield takes on new roles, his reflections on the audition process offer insight into how even accomplished actors face insecurities. His willingness to adapt, paired with Seacat’s advice, helped him overcome doubt and land one of his most iconic roles.
