Actress Mishi Khan has joined the growing chorus of voices criticizing Islamic scholar Dr. Zakir Naik for his controversial remarks during his recent visit to Pakistan. Taking to Instagram, Mishi Khan shared a video where she expressed her outrage over Naik’s comments about Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and his critical views on the country.

In her video, the actress addressed the irony of Naik being treated as a state guest while making derogatory comments about the national airline. “Zakir Naik, who was a state guest, has returned home. Just as Javed Akhtar spoke ill of Pakistan after visiting India, Naik is also disparaging our national airline,” Mishi said.,

Naik’s Complaint

She also took aim at Naik’s complaint regarding excess baggage charges during his travel to Pakistan. Naik had earlier mentioned that his luggage weighed 1000 kilograms, and he was disappointed with PIA for offering only a 50 percent discount instead of waiving the charges altogether.

In a scathing critique, Mishi questioned the appropriateness of Naik’s demands, stating, “What were you bringing that weighed a thousand kilograms? If you were allowed to take 500 kilograms, does being a state guest mean you should take advantage of the situation and carry everything for free?”

Mishi Khan didn’t stop at Naik’s comments about PIA; she also voiced her disappointment with his controversial remarks about women. During his visit, Naik made statements suggesting that unmarried women have only two options—either marry a man who already has a wife or be viewed as “bazaari aurat” (public property). His comments sparked outrage, with many finding them deeply offensive.

Naik’s Language Regarding Women

Mishi expressed her dismay over Naik’s language regarding women, urging him to focus on guiding men instead of making derogatory statements about women. “I am deeply saddened that you use such language about women. You should be guiding men instead. Fear God and choose your words carefully,” she said.

The actress further called on the government to reconsider the guest list for state visitors, questioning why figures like Zakir Naik and Indian lyricist Javed Akhtar—who had earlier criticized Pakistan after attending an event in Lahore—are invited as state guests only to speak negatively about the country. “Why invite people like Zakir Naik and Javed Akhtar, who enjoy Pakistan’s hospitality only to speak negatively about it later? If India is so good, then stay there. Do we not have any self-respect?” Mishi asked, highlighting her frustration over the lack of respect shown for Pakistan’s dignity.

Reactions from Pakistani celebrities and public figures

Naik’s remarks about women and marriage have sparked widespread backlash, with several Pakistani celebrities and public figures condemning his statements. During his tour of Pakistan, Naik claimed, “There is no way an unmarried woman can be respected. So, they have two options. First, get married to a man who already has a wife, or she will become a ‘bazaari aurat’—public property. I don’t have a better word. Any respectable woman would opt for the first option.”

In response, many celebrities have taken to social media to express their disapproval. They have called for a more nuanced and inclusive interpretation of Islam, rejecting Naik’s narrow views on women’s roles and marriage.

As the backlash continues, Mishi Khan’s condemnation reflects the growing frustration among Pakistanis who are critical of Naik’s remarks and the government’s decision to host him as a state guest.
