Meghan Markle’s recent solo charity visits have not won over the UK public, despite hopes that they would improve her popularity. Royal historian Hugo Vickers pointed to cultural differences between the US and the UK as a key factor in the mixed reception.
The Duchess of Sussex recently made appearances at Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara and attended the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles gala, aiming to highlight charitable causes close to her heart. However, Vickers argued that these efforts have not resonated as expected in the UK.

Speaking to The Sun, Vickers noted that Meghan’s choice of wearing a red dress during these appearances, which he described as a “power statement” in the US, did not have the same effect in the UK. “Her wearing a red dress is this sort of power statement like Princess Diana wearing a black dress when she went to the Serpentine Gallery,” he explained.
He continued, “I don’t think that anything she’s doing at the moment is going to appeal to people in the UK very much. This sort of symbolism works better in America than it does over here.”
Meghan has faced ongoing challenges in winning favor with the British public, particularly after stepping back from royal duties alongside her husband, Prince Harry. Despite her charitable efforts, the reception in the UK remains lukewarm, as royal commentators like Vickers believe her actions are better suited to American sensibilities than those in Britain.
While her solo charity visits highlight her commitment to making a difference, bridging the cultural gap between the US and UK remains a challenge for the Duchess.
