KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a warning to fishermen on Tuesday, advising them to avoid deep waters due to a depression forming in the Arabian Sea. The system is expected to move further towards the Oman coast.

“The depression over the West-central Arabian Sea has slowly shifted westward during the past 10 hours. It is now about 1,190 kilometers southwest of Karachi,” said the PMD in its latest update.

A satellite image released by the PMD shows the depression’s progress as of October 15, 2024. The department noted that winds are currently blowing at 30 to 40 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching up to 50 kilometers per hour around the system’s center. These wind speeds are expected to persist until the evening before gradually reducing.

The PMD also warned that sea conditions would remain rough until the evening but are likely to improve afterward. They further predicted that the depression would weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area by the afternoon.

Threat to Pakistan’s Coastal Regions

The weather system does not pose any threat to Pakistan’s coastal regions. No areas along Pakistan’s coastline are under any danger from this system, the PMD confirmed.

On Monday, Karachi experienced light rainfall in the early morning hours due to cloud cover from the depression in the Arabian Sea. The showers brought temporary relief from the city’s heat, but no significant weather disruptions have been reported.

Ensuring Safety

Despite the warnings, authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure safety for coastal communities. Fishermen are being advised to stay informed about weather updates before venturing out into the sea.

The PMD continues to track the depression’s movement as it heads toward the Oman coast, where it may still cause adverse weather conditions. Fishermen and residents along the coastline are urged to take precautionary measures and avoid risky sea travel until the situation clears.

This advisory comes as part of the PMD’s efforts to ensure safety and preparedness during unpredictable weather events. The department remains vigilant and will provide updates as the situation evolves.
