At GITEX Global 2024, a significant discussion took place between H.E. Faisal Niaz Tirmazi, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UAE, and Usman Asif, CEO of Devsinc. This meeting focused on the evolving IT landscape in the Middle East and highlighted the role of Pakistan’s tech sector in this transformation.

During their conversation, they emphasized the need for strategic alliances between the UAE and Pakistan. They believe that these partnerships can contribute to the global digital economy through IT-friendly initiatives. Tirmazi stated, “The success of IT startups in the Gulf region is tied to an ecosystem that fosters innovation.” He underscored the importance of continued backing from both public and private sectors for these efforts.

Growing IT Market in the UAE

Tirmazi highlighted that the UAE’s IT market is projected to grow by 8.1% each year. He noted that its value could surpass USD 22 billion by 2025. The wider Middle East is experiencing a similar boom, driven by strong investments in AI, automation, and cloud technologies. “This creates a significant opportunity for Pakistan,” Tirmazi stressed. He pointed out that Pakistan’s thriving IT sector already generates over USD 2 billion in exports annually, positioning the nation to capitalize on this regional growth.

Usman Asif acknowledged the vital role of Pakistani startups in this ecosystem. He stated, “Pakistani startups have raised over USD 365 million in the last two years.” This figure demonstrates their potential on a global scale. With 64% of Pakistan’s population under 30 and over 88 million internet users, Asif believes the country possesses both the talent and market necessary to become a key player in the region’s digital future.

Investment in the Startup Community

Investment in Pakistan’s startup community emerged as a critical focus in their discussions. Asif emphasized the need to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which comprise 90% of private businesses in Pakistan. He stated, “We need to create an ecosystem where tech startups can scale, access international markets, and contribute to regional growth.” He believes that through strategic collaborations, the UAE and Pakistan can lead this effort.

Moving forward, both Usman Asif and Ambassador Faisal Tirmazi agreed that Pakistan and the UAE are well-positioned to combine their strengths. They can drive digital enablement across the region. The UAE’s advanced tech infrastructure, paired with Pakistan’s expanding IT workforce, creates a powerful partnership. Together, the two nations aim to foster bilateral collaborations that will boost the region’s digital economy and create new growth opportunities.

The discussions at GITEX 2024 underscored the importance of collaboration between the UAE and Pakistan. With a focus on innovation, investment, and strategic partnerships, both countries are set to make significant strides in the global IT landscape. The future looks promising as they work together to enhance their digital capabilities and foster growth.
