Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has assured the government that his party will fully support the 26th Constitutional Amendment. This move ends the deadlock between the government and Maulana Fazlur Rehman, according to Express News.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman instructed JUI-F senators to back the government’s bill in both the National Assembly and the Senate. “We will support the amendment draft that was presented after consultation with us,” the JUI-F chief stated.
Following this announcement, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari expressed optimism about the amendment’s passage. He emphasized that the amendment would be completed, with or without Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) support.
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s Statement
Speaking to the media at Parliament House, Bilawal expressed disappointment with PTI’s reaction following a joint press conference held by him and Maulana Fazlur Rehman. Despite this, he remained confident that the amendment would pass.
“Congratulations to everyone on the 26th Constitutional Amendment day,” Bilawal said. “There is no contentious point left in this amendment.”
Bilawal also mentioned that he had personally thanked Maulana Fazlur Rehman for his cooperation. “No amount of thanks is enough for Maulana. His role will be remembered in history. I’m grateful that he instructed his senators to ensure their presence for the amendment,” Bilawal added.
Federal Cabinet Approves 26th Constitutional Amendment
Earlier, the Federal Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, gave its approval for the 26th Constitutional Amendment bill. The approval came after a detailed discussion during a cabinet meeting held at Parliament House on Saturday night.
The meeting included a briefing from Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who shared details of his discussions with Maulana Fazlur Rehman. The cabinet’s approval was a crucial step for moving the bill forward in parliament.
Strict Security Measures for National Assembly Session
In preparation for today’s National Assembly session, strict security arrangements have been put in place. According to the Assembly’s spokesperson, guest entry has been strictly prohibited. Only media representatives with full-session press gallery cards issued by the Directorate General of Media, National Assembly Secretariat, will be allowed into Parliament House.
To further tighten regulations, the issuance of one-day press gallery cards has been suspended. Cameramen and journalists must carry their official press gallery cards for security reasons.
The National Assembly’s agenda for today includes nine key points, although the 26th Constitutional Amendment is expected to dominate the session. The Assembly will convene at 6 pm, while the Senate session was scheduled for 3 pm.
PTI Boycotts Voting on 26th Amendment
In a last-minute move, PTI announced that it would boycott the voting process for the 26th Constitutional Amendment in both the National Assembly and the Senate. This decision was confirmed through a statement released after a meeting of the party’s political committee earlier today.
Despite PTI’s boycott, the government remains determined to move forward with the amendment. The voting process is set to proceed as planned, with coalition partners and allies firmly backing the bill.
