ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has announced it will not vote on the proposed constitutional amendment without the approval of its founding chairman, Imran Khan. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan made this statement during a press conference at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa House on Saturday. He conveyed the party’s position to JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who is mediating on the issue.

Gohar Ali Khan shared that he met with Imran Khan in Adiala Jail for the first time in over two weeks. The meeting lasted 45 minutes and took place after the recent developments surrounding the constitutional amendment. Gohar said, “For the first time since October 3, we discussed the amendment. Mr. Khan was unaware of the developments and condemned the arrest of his sisters.”

During the meeting, Imran Khan expressed appreciation for Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s steadfastness on the proposed amendment. Gohar highlighted that Khan advised PTI to continue consulting with Rehman and to support him in his efforts to make the amendment draft acceptable to all political parties.

Khan Praises Rehman’s Firm Stance

Gohar provided Imran Khan with details about the proposed constitutional amendment. Upon hearing this information, Khan praised Rehman’s firm stance. He also suggested four names for discussions regarding the amendment draft. “We aim to meet Mr. Khan again on Monday,” Gohar added.

In addition to Gohar, other PTI leaders will join him for talks with JUI-F leaders. Omar Ayub Khan, Senator Shibli Faraz, Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Ahmed Bhachar, and KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur will participate in these discussions.

In response to a question, Gohar criticized the government’s alleged threats, calling them unacceptable. He claimed the government lacks a two-thirds majority, a feat no government has achieved in recent years. “This lack of majority limits their ability to push through constitutional changes,” he asserted.

Gohar also confirmed that discussions regarding the constitutional package took place with Imran Khan. When asked about the political situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, he reaffirmed that Chief Minister Gandapur enjoys Khan’s full support. “The leadership will continue engaging with Maulana Fazlur Rehman,” he stated.

He criticized the government’s conduct, labeling it “unconstitutional and undemocratic.” Gohar emphasized that the PTI remains committed to working with Maulana Fazlur Rehman as the political landscape evolves.

This PTI stance comes a day after a special parliamentary committee approved the proposed draft of the constitutional amendment. The development has raised concerns among PTI leaders, who emphasize the importance of securing Imran Khan’s approval before proceeding further.

As the political situation unfolds, the PTI’s unity and strategy remain crucial. The party seeks to navigate this complex landscape while adhering to its founding principles. The upcoming meeting on Monday will be pivotal in shaping the party’s approach to the proposed amendment and its interactions with other political entities.

The PTI is standing firm on its conditions for participating in the constitutional amendment discussions. The party is focused on ensuring that Imran Khan’s vision and directives guide their actions in the current political climate.
