NASA Administrator Calls for Investigation into Musk’s Alleged Contacts with Putin

In light of a Wall Street Journal report alleging Elon Musk has engaged in regular contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin since late 2022, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson on Friday advocated for an investigation into these claims. Nelson emphasized that if the report proves accurate, it raises concerns for NASA, the Department of Defense, and U.S. intelligence agencies, given Musk’s access to sensitive information due to SpaceX’s extensive ties with these entities.

The report states that Musk discussed “personal topics, business, and geopolitical tensions” with Putin, leading to increased national security concerns. Musk’s company, SpaceX, works closely with NASA and the U.S. military, which could theoretically expose him to sensitive intelligence. Nelson commented to Semafor’s Burgess Everett that he is uncertain if the story is true but believes it should be investigated given the potential national security implications.

Concerns Over Musk’s Foreign Interactions

While some U.S. officials have voiced counterintelligence concerns regarding Musk’s foreign contacts, particularly with Russian figures, the intelligence community has hesitated to launch a formal investigation due to Musk’s American citizenship, a source told CNN. The Wall Street Journal report alleges that discussions between Musk and Putin have been verified by current and former officials from the U.S., Europe, and Russia. However, several White House officials said they were unaware of these interactions, suggesting that the information is closely held within the government.

Prominent Role

Musk has played a prominent role in the Ukraine conflict, particularly by providing Starlink satellite services that have proven essential for Ukrainian military communications. However, Musk’s approach toward the conflict has shifted over time, aligning with figures like Donald Trump in advocating a peaceful resolution. Last year, Musk suggested a “Ukraine-Russia Peace” plan, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized, raising questions about Musk’s stance on the war.

Further complicating matters, SpaceX reportedly limited Starlink signals in Ukraine, which interfered with potential Ukrainian advances. According to Walter Isaacson’s biography of Musk, he declined Ukraine’s request to activate Starlink near Crimea, fearing a Russian nuclear response. Although Musk has denied prior claims that he discussed the Ukraine conflict with Putin, these recent reports cast doubt on those denials.

Musk has recently increased his involvement in U.S. politics. He contributed almost $44 million in October to a super PAC supporting Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign, marking him as a key financial supporter of Trump’s presidential bid. Musk has publicly appeared with Trump on the campaign trail, promoting election conspiracy theories and encouraging voters to support Trump.

In recent days, Musk’s super PAC has attracted additional scrutiny by offering $1 million daily sweepstakes for swing-state voters, a move that some allege may violate election laws. The Justice Department has expressed concerns, but Musk’s organization awarded two prizes to voters in Michigan and Wisconsin.

The Path Forward

With Musk’s influence spanning multiple sectors, Nelson’s call for an investigation highlights the gravity of the situation. The potential for Musk’s interactions with foreign leaders, particularly adversaries like Putin, could lead to intensified scrutiny of his activities both abroad and at home.
