NEPRA Raises Electricity Price for Karachi Amid Fuel Cost Hikes

Share the latest news updates

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved an electricity price increase for Karachi, raising the rate by Rs3.03 per unit. This adjustment, part of the July 2024 monthly fuel price adjustment, will impact consumer bills starting in December 2024. This increase comes as K-Electric requested a higher rate, citing rising fuel costs.

December Bills to Reflect Additional Charges

NEPRA’s official notification confirms that the additional charges will be applied in December bills. K-Electric initially proposed a Rs3.09 per unit increase, aiming to offset escalating fuel expenses. After evaluating this request, NEPRA approved a Rs3.03 per unit adjustment.

Recent Price Adjustments in Fuel Cost for August

Just days prior to this increase, NEPRA announced a price reduction of Rs0.86 per unit as part of the August fuel adjustment. The decrease aimed to provide relief on consumer bills, benefiting customers across distribution companies (DISCOs) who had already received their October bills. This adjustment will reflect in November bills, although it does not extend to K-Electric customers, lifeline users, prepaid consumers, or electric vehicle charging stations.

Looking Ahead Amid Rising Fuel Costs

While NEPRA’s recent reductions aimed to alleviate financial pressures, rising fuel prices continue to drive adjustments, adding further charges for Karachi’s residents.
