ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad police arrested human rights lawyer Imaan Mazari and her husband, Hadi Ali, on Monday. Officials stated the arrest was for “creating a security risk by interfering in state duties” during an international cricket team’s visit. The police announced the arrest on X, explaining that it was done “as per the law and regulations.”

Imaan’s mother, former human rights minister Shireen Mazari, confirmed the arrest. She stated that her daughter was taken into custody early in the morning. “State fascism in full swing,” she wrote on X, criticizing the arrest.

Accusations of Police Violence

Shireen Mazari alleged that the police had assaulted Imaan days earlier. She claimed that officers “swung a steel barrier deliberately into her,” injuring her daughter. A video circulating on social media appeared to show Imaan and Hadi moving road barriers to ease traffic flow, while a traffic constable and another man attempted to block the road by moving the barriers back.

In one frame, a man in a jacket is seen pushing the barrier towards Imaan, leading Hadi to push him back. The video has fueled public debate, with some questioning the police’s role in the altercation.

HRCP and Public Figures Condemn Arrest

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) criticized the couple’s arrest, describing the charges as “vague” and the act as arbitrary. “Both are committed, well-respected human rights defenders,” HRCP said, calling for their “immediate and unconditional” release.

Former PTI MPA Taimur Saleem Jhagra also condemned the arrests. He emphasized the importance of voices like Imaan’s, saying they “represent the oppressed in society.” Jhagra urged unity among those fighting for justice, adding that now is the time for everyone seeking a fair society to stand together.

Veteran journalist Hamid Mir added his voice, labeling the arrest “unacceptable.” He noted that such actions “may satisfy the egos of some powerful people” but would ultimately harm Pakistan’s image, including that of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the state itself.

Mahrang Baloch

Baloch Yakjehti Committee leader Mahrang Baloch voiced her concerns, stating that she was “deeply troubled” by Imaan and Hadi’s arrest. She shared that Imaan was her lawyer in a travel ban case and believes Imaan is targeted due to her commitment to human rights, especially her advocacy against enforced disappearances.

“Imaan has faced continuous harassment and arrests because of her role as a lawyer,” Mahrang noted. She pledged solidarity with Imaan, her family, and the broader legal community, condemning the disregard for the rule of law.

This arrest is not Imaan’s first. In August of last year, she was detained in a sedition case after a rally speech, alongside former lawmaker Ali Wazir. Although she was granted bail, she was re-arrested the same day on terrorism charges and only released on September 2, 2023, after an Islamabad anti-terrorism court approved her bail.

Growing Concern for Human Rights in Pakistan

The arrest of Imaan and her husband has intensified debate over human rights in Pakistan. Supporters argue that voices like Imaan’s are essential for challenging injustice, yet they face significant obstacles. As authorities continue to crack down on activists, the space for human rights defenders seems to be shrinking, raising questions about Pakistan’s commitment to freedom and justice.
