Instagram users are facing significant issues with direct messaging. Many report being unable to communicate within the app. This outage began around 7 a.m. ET, according to Downdetector, a site that tracks online service disruptions. Major cities like New York City, Los Angeles, and Dallas are among the most affected.

Global Impact

The outage isn’t limited to the United States. Users in the UK, Australia, and parts of Europe and Asia have also reported problems. Issues with Facebook Messenger have also surfaced, leading to frustration among users. According to Meta’s service status page, there are “some disruptions” with its Posting Tool for Instagram. Of the reported issues, 62 percent relate to the app itself, while 27 percent concern server connections, and 11 percent involve sharing.

Downdetector indicates that Facebook users feel the brunt of the outage. About 45 percent claim the website is experiencing the most significant disruptions, with 39 percent citing the app. The remaining 16 percent report server connection issues.

Social Media Reactions

As the outage unfolded, users took to X (formerly Twitter) to vent their frustrations and seek confirmation from others experiencing similar problems. One user posted, “Don’t worry, it’s not just you; Instagram DMs are really down.” Many questioned whether they were banned from the platforms or if their accounts had been hacked.

Users attempting to send direct messages on Instagram and Messenger encounter error messages. The exact number of those impacted is unknown. However, Downdetector shows thousands of reports worldwide. Over 375 million people use Instagram Direct Messages monthly, making the outage more significant given its widespread user base.

As of now, Meta has not acknowledged the outage. The lack of communication from the company adds to the anxiety among users. Many are left in the dark, unsure of when services will resume.
