CHATTOGRAM: South Africa achieved their largest Test victory, defeating Bangladesh by an innings and 273 runs in the second Test at Chattogram. The dominant win came within three days, keeping South Africa’s hopes alive for the World Test Championship final.

Resuming day three at 38-4, Bangladesh quickly fell to 48-8 in their first innings. Mominul Haque and Taijul Islam offered resistance with a ninth-wicket stand of 103, helping Bangladesh reach 159. Kagiso Rabada led South Africa’s bowling attack with impressive figures of 5-37.

South Africa enforced the follow-on and quickly bowled out Bangladesh for 143 in just 43.4 overs. Spinners Keshav Maharaj and Senuran Muthusamy took charge, claiming 5-59 and 4-45, respectively, sealing a 2-0 series sweep.

Ninth Innings

This victory is South Africa’s ninth innings win over Bangladesh in just 16 Test matches, breaking their own record set in 2017, also against Bangladesh.

“I am incredibly proud – that was special,” said South Africa captain Aiden Markram. He acknowledged that although the journey to the World Test Championship final remains challenging, the team is focused on making it to Lord’s.

South Africa’s win places them fourth in the Championship standings. Victories in their upcoming home Tests against Sri Lanka and Pakistan could secure their spot in the final. Even three wins and a draw may be enough, depending on other series outcomes.

With this commanding performance, South Africa shows it is a team to watch on the road to the World Test Championship final.
