Apple CEO Tim Cook recently revealed that the adoption rate for iOS 18.1 has reached unprecedented levels, doubling the rate of iOS 17.1’s uptake within the same time frame in 2023. According to Cook, this rapid update adoption is a promising early indicator of Apple Intelligence’s popularity, which was launched for U.S. users on October 28, 2024.

Strong Adoption Driven by Apple Intelligence

Cook shared with CNBC that, just three days into its release, iOS 18.1’s download rate significantly surpassed previous updates, highlighting Apple Intelligence as a key factor. “Users are adopting iOS 18.1 at twice the rate they adopted 17.1,” Cook stated. He attributed this surge not only to iOS enhancements but also to the influence of the new 15 Pro and Pro Max models, which come integrated with Apple Intelligence.

The Impact on New and Existing Users

Cook suggested that the demand for iOS 18.1 is due to a mix of new iPhone 16 users and those holding onto previous Pro models, who are eager to benefit from the advanced capabilities of Apple Intelligence. He mentioned that previous adoption trends showed steady growth, noting that iOS 15 adoption was stronger than 14, and this trend has continued with each version. The appeal of Apple Intelligence’s features seems to have accelerated this pattern even more.

Limited Regional Release

While the increased iOS 18.1 adoption rate is apparent, Cook did not specify if this trend is global or limited to the U.S., where Apple Intelligence is exclusive. Currently, the feature is only available to American users on both iOS and macOS, with Mac users receiving Apple Intelligence through the new macOS Sequoia update. Cook provided no details on Mac adoption rates, leaving speculation open as to whether the trend will mirror that of iOS in the U.S.
