Pakistani actress Nargis has accused her husband, Maajid Bashir—a Punjab police official—of domestic violence. Maajid Bashir has now obtained interim bail until November 18 to avoid arrest amid these allegations.

Allegations of Assault and Demands

Nargis filed a complaint against Bashir, alleging that he demanded property documents and money from her. She further claimed that he tried to bring another woman into their home. When she refused, Nargis stated that Bashir assaulted her, causing injuries to her face and body. The incident reportedly occurred on November 1 in Lahore and led Nargis’s brother to call emergency services to report the assault.

Maajid Bashir’s Defense

In response to the allegations, Inspector Maajid Bashir denied any wrongdoing. He expressed respect for his wife, Nargis, stating, “My wife is a respectable woman, and arguments occur in every household.” He claimed that people were trying to tarnish his character, adding, “I will take legal action against those maligning me.” Bashir also emphasized that Nargis is still his wife, asserting that their situation is personal, as “disputes happen in every home.”

Bashir indicated his intent to defend his reputation through every available legal means, describing himself as a dignified individual committed to clearing his name.

Involvement of Nargis’s Son and Canadian Embassy

Nargis’s son, Ali Murtaza, has taken action on behalf of his mother. He submitted a request to the Canadian embassy in Pakistan, citing the alleged domestic violence his mother has endured. Murtaza’s request includes calls for his mother’s immediate protection and the arrest of Bashir. According to Murtaza, his mother, also known as Ghazala, suffered physical injuries due to the alleged assault.

In response to Murtaza’s appeal, the Canadian Consul informed Punjab Inspector General Dr. Usman Anwar of the situation, underscoring the need for a prompt response to the allegations.

Ongoing Investigation and Assurance of Justice

The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Investigation has confirmed that a thorough, merit-based investigation is underway. This development comes amid calls for justice from various quarters, including the Punjab Women Protection Authority.

Hina Pervaiz Butt, Chairperson of the Punjab Women Protection Authority, assured Nargis of her support and promised that she would receive justice. Butt’s intervention highlights the heightened awareness and response to issues of domestic violence, particularly when public figures are involved.

Legal Proceedings and Next Steps

With the interim bail in place, Maajid Bashir is temporarily protected from arrest until the next court session on November 18. However, the legal process continues as investigators delve into the circumstances surrounding Nargis’s allegations. Both parties are expected to present evidence, and the outcome of the investigation could significantly impact Bashir’s career and public standing.

Public Attention and Social Impact

This case has drawn widespread public attention, spotlighting the issue of domestic violence in Pakistan. The involvement of a high-ranking police officer further intensifies the scrutiny, as observers await the legal system’s response.

As the investigation proceeds, advocacy groups and supporters of women’s rights are closely monitoring the developments, hoping the case will pave the way for stronger measures against domestic violence in Pakistan.
