Former India coach Ravi Shastri stands firmly behind star batter Virat Kohli as India heads into the highly anticipated Test series against Australia. Kohli’s recent form has raised eyebrows, but Shastri believes the experienced batter will make a strong comeback.

Kohli has struggled in recent months, scoring only one half-century and averaging a low 21.33 across five Test matches against Bangladesh and New Zealand this year. Despite this slump, Shastri remains confident that Kohli will reclaim his form on Australian soil.

Shastri’s Words for Kohli’s Doubters

When asked about Kohli’s critics, Shastri offered a powerful response. “Well, the King is back in his territory. That’s all I will tell them,” Shastri said on The ICC Review with host Sanjana Ganesan. Shastri emphasized that Kohli’s past performances in Australia have earned him immense respect and will be on the minds of opponents.

Kohli’s history in Australia is indeed remarkable. From his first Test ton in Adelaide in 2011/12 to his astonishing 692 runs at an average of 86.50 in 2014, and his leadership during India’s series win in 2018/19, Kohli has proven himself time and again on Australian pitches.

A Dip in Form Raises Concerns

Kohli’s recent performance against New Zealand has been underwhelming. In three Tests, he averaged only 15.50, and some of his dismissals have faced scrutiny. One notable dismissal was when Kohli was bowled by a full toss from Mitchell Santner during the second Test in Pune. He was also run out after attempting a risky single in Mumbai’s final Test.

These recent struggles have fueled critics, but Shastri remains unfazed. He believes that Kohli’s hunger to perform, combined with his familiarity with Australian conditions, will help him bounce back.

Shastri Advises Kohli to Stay Calm and Focused

Shastri also provided advice for Kohli, stressing the importance of patience in the opening stages of his innings. “Your juices are flowing, you’re charged up. It’s again a case with Virat. You want to see calmness because at times you are overeager to get out there and throw the first punch,” Shastri explained.

He added that maintaining calmness in the initial half-hour or first few innings of the series will be crucial for Kohli. Shastri believes that if Kohli can play at his own pace, without rushing, he will be able to settle into his game and regain his form.

The High Stakes of the Upcoming Test Series

The five-match Test series against Australia holds immense significance. It could determine the teams that reach next year’s ICC World Test Championship Final at Lord’s. With this added pressure, Kohli’s experience and performance will be essential for India.

Shastri remains confident that Kohli’s previous triumphs in Australia will inspire him to perform at his best. The former coach sees this tour as an opportunity for Kohli to silence critics and prove that he still has the skills and determination to dominate on the international stage.
