Billionaire Elon Musk, a close adviser to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, met with Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, on Monday, according to The New York Times. The meeting aimed to explore ways to ease tensions between the U.S. and Iran.
The meeting, which lasted over an hour, took place at a secret location. Two Iranian officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, called the meeting “positive” and “good news,” though they did not elaborate on the specifics of the discussion.
Asked about the meeting, Steven Cheung, Trump’s communications director, declined to comment, saying, “We do not comment on reports of private meetings that did or did not occur.” Musk did not respond to requests for comment.
Potential Shift in US-Iran Relations
The meeting between Musk and Iravani suggests a possible shift in U.S.-Iran relations. Despite the long-standing tension between Iran and the Trump administration, which included Trump’s decision to exit the 2015 nuclear deal and impose sanctions, the meeting opens the door to potential dialogue.
Musk, who has gained significant influence in the Trump transition team, has played a key role in global affairs. Recently, he provided vital communications technology to Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia, solidifying his reputation as an influential figure.
The Iranian officials confirmed that Musk initiated the meeting, with Iravani selecting the meeting’s location. This direct interaction indicates Iran’s interest in exploring avenues for a new deal with the U.S., despite the charged political climate.
Trump’s Stance on Iran
President Trump has long held a hardline stance on Iran. During his first term, he pulled the U.S. out of the 2015 nuclear deal, reimposed sanctions on Iran’s oil exports, and authorized the assassination of top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani in 2020.
In retaliation, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei forbade any negotiations with the Trump administration, and Iranian officials vowed to avenge Soleimani’s death. In a recent court filing, U.S. federal prosecutors revealed that Iran had allegedly plotted to assassinate Trump.
However, since Trump’s re-election, Iranian officials have begun to debate the possibility of engaging with the U.S. Many in Iran’s new government, including President Masoud Pezeshkian’s supporters, favor negotiations, hoping that a new deal could lead to the lifting of sanctions and better economic prospects.
Iran’s Position on Talks
Despite opposition from hardline factions, a growing number of Iranian officials have indicated their willingness to engage in talks with the Trump administration. Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, expressed this sentiment on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Differences can be resolved through cooperation and dialogue.” He emphasized Iran’s commitment to pursuing peaceful nuclear energy and its openness to future negotiations.
Although the history of conflict between the two countries is well-documented, analysts believe that both sides are exploring the possibility of a diplomatic opening. Ali Vaez, the Iran director for the International Crisis Group, stated, “Everything is possible with Trump.” Vaez also noted that while Trump may be open to a deal, some of his advisers could advocate for increased pressure on Iran.
Musk as a Diplomatic Intermediary
Musk’s meeting with Iravani might provide a workaround for Iran to avoid direct engagement with U.S. officials, given the sensitive nature of U.S.-Iran relations. One Iranian official mentioned that Ambassador Iravani suggested Musk seek sanctions exemptions and bring some of his businesses to Tehran, opening up a potential economic opportunity.
