Islamabad’s District and Session Court has acquitted former interior minister Sheikh Rasheed in a defamation case filed against him for making derogatory remarks about former President Asif Ali Zardari. The ruling, delivered today, brings an end to a year-long legal battle for the Awami Muslim League (AML) chief.

Rasheed, who was booked last year at the Aabpara police station, was accused of defaming Zardari. The case was filed after Rasheed made comments that allegedly harmed the reputation of the PPP co-chairman.

Court’s Decision

The case reached a turning point when Judicial Magistrate Yasir Mahmood delivered the reserved verdict on Rasheed’s acquittal petition. Rasheed appeared before the court today, accompanied by his lawyers, Masroof Khan and Sardar Shehbaz Raza. The court cleared him of all charges.

The acquittal came as a relief to the former interior minister, who has faced significant political and legal pressure in recent months. The ruling also raises questions about the political implications of the case, given Rasheed’s position as a vocal critic of the PPP.

The Charges Against Rasheed

Sheikh Rasheed was booked under three sections of the Pakistan Penal Code: 120B (criminal conspiracy), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups), and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief). These charges were based on his statements, which the complainant, PPP divisional president, claimed could incite violence and disrupt national peace.

According to the FIR (First Information Report), Rasheed’s remarks were intended to provoke conflict between the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), two major political rivals. The complainant further argued that Rasheed’s statements posed a “permanent danger” to Zardari and his family, suggesting that the comments could lead to widespread unrest.

Political Motives Alleged

The FIR also alleged that Rasheed’s statements were part of a broader political strategy aimed at stoking tensions between political factions. The complainant suggested that Rasheed’s remarks were designed to create a rift between the PTI and PPP, ultimately destabilizing the political environment in the country.

Rasheed has long been a prominent figure in Pakistan’s political landscape, known for his fiery speeches and sharp criticism of political opponents. His legal troubles are seen as a continuation of the fierce rivalry between his party, the AML, and the PPP, which has often played out in the media and the courts.

Impact of the Acquittal

Rasheed’s acquittal may have significant political consequences, especially as Pakistan approaches upcoming elections. His political opponents could use the case to challenge his credibility, while his supporters may see the decision as a victory for free speech and political expression.

For Rasheed, the court’s ruling allows him to focus on his political career, which has been closely linked to his role as a vocal critic of Pakistan’s mainstream political parties.
