Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor recently shared her struggles with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal disorder that deeply affected her confidence during her teenage years. Speaking at Barkha Dutt’s We The Women summit, the Khoobsurat star revealed how she coped with the challenges of PCOS, offering a message of resilience to others dealing with similar issues.

Facing PCOS as a Teenager

Sonam disclosed that her PCOS diagnosis came during a pivotal time in her life. “I had something called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Because of that, I dealt with multiple hormonal issues. When I turned 16, I started gaining weight,” she shared, highlighting how society’s expectations made her experience more difficult.

Known as the “Sweet 16” phase, this is often portrayed as a time of beauty and transformation for young women. However, Sonam faced struggles that went beyond physical appearance. “I had facial hair and acne,” she added, recalling how these symptoms caused her significant emotional distress.

Coping with Criticism

Being the daughter of Bollywood superstar Anil Kapoor came with its own set of challenges. Sonam revealed she was subjected to harsh trolling during her youth. “People would say, ‘Oh, she’s Anil Kapoor’s daughter,’ followed by weird comments,” she said. Although she acknowledged that many of these hormonal changes subsided with age, the impact on her confidence was profound.

Finding Inspiration in Kajol

Sonam credited her mother for encouraging her to embrace her uniqueness. Her mother pointed to actress Kajol, who was then one of Bollywood’s leading stars and was known for her natural beauty, including her unibrow. “My mom showed me Kajol’s picture and said, ‘Look at her! She’s the biggest heroine right now.’ That gave me a lot of motivation,” Sonam recalled.

This perspective helped her view beauty differently and inspired her to face criticism with grace and determination.

Overcoming Trauma

Despite overcoming many of the physical challenges associated with PCOS, Sonam admitted the emotional trauma lingered. “I was traumatised by the experience,” she said, emphasizing the importance of discussing such issues openly to create awareness and support for others.

Her candid revelations have sparked conversations around body image, hormonal health, and societal pressures on young women, highlighting the need for empathy and understanding.
